Book Review: The Shack

The Shack by William Paul Young

When Mackenzie Allen Philip's youngest daughter, Missy, is abducted and evidence shows shows she has been brutally murdered, Mackenzie finds himself surrounded by "The Great Sadness".

One day, he finds a note, apparently from God, in his mailbox inviting him to come to the shack where his daughter is presumed to have died. With much hesitation, he decides to go to the shack in hopes of getting some answers about his daughter's death and the whereabouts of her body.

When he arrives, his whole world is changed by what he finds there.

There have been many criticism and praise for this book. It made me curious to find out what it was all about.

I have to admit that I found this book difficult to read. I was unable to comprehend what was happening in some parts. The conversations did not flow for me. There were some parts that were interesting and had me thinking and I could appreciate Mackenzie's grief.

Overall, I did not like the writing style. The biggest criticism of this book, I think, is that the author wants us to believe that this is based on a true event. And perhaps it was, but for me, I read it as a novel.

You can read the first chapter of the book HERE.

Conclusion: I can't say I loved this book, or even much liked it. The concept was more interesting than the actual story and it didn't live up to the hype, in my opinion.

I have to agree with you The Shack was an interesting book. While parts of it were hard to follow, over all it wasn't a bad book, but I too saw it more as a novel rather than "an experience". It definately gave me some food for thought though

Thanks for your review. I have been debating whether or not to get this book. I think someday I will read it. A great one I just read was, The Art of Racing in the Rain. If you are a dog person you may like this one. It is told through the eyes of a very special dog.

I had to agree with your comment here, "The biggest criticism of this book, I think, is that the author wants us to believe that this is based on a true event. And perhaps it was, but for me, I read it as a novel."
